Blog Run

DC Blogfest, PR doesn’t phone home, Jay-Z HOVA, Sonic gets Erin and AT&T is for “lovers”  November 20th, 2006

Issue Dynamics: Beltway Blogger Boot Camp is a Success!
An interesting take on blogging from the beltway, and some good points on the transparency. Of course, this is all funny and ironic coming from the land of astroturf … but that’s another story.

collegewebeditor.com: Why some higher PR people don’t follow up on media requests (The Answers!)
A Q&A on why some PR people don’t necessarily follow-up on media requests - although this is more a case study on why some PR people might be ignoring blogs. As a blogger myself, I have had that experience of trying to get info … and being ignored.

Shop Talk: Jay-Z to Show Us What Bud’s Got

Can Jay-Z get any more branding and marketing in his blood? He took Roc-A-Fella and his label to the top, voiced his opinion on certain liquors and brought out his own … and now is an advisor to Bud. A good thing to think about, though, as hip-hop has become more and more mainstream. Word.

Erin Caldwell’s PRBlog: My Uncool-ness Makes Me Popular and Makes Sonic Rich
The interesting nature of search engine results, criticizing a commercials that doesn’t speak to her and the continued comments and fall-out from fans. But, an interesting discussion if advertising is just for identity or call to action.

VoIP Watch: AT&T Hooking WiMax Is No Cheap Trick
You know, a lot goes into product rollouts and product launches. You plan the city, you plan the products, you plan the press. So that’s why AT&T’s choice of Pahrump is interesting. Pahrump is better known for Art Bell and “ranches.”

It’s not the A list, is Second Life Hype Life?, Quotes Matter, And Listen  November 16th, 2006

Blog Business Summit: Bloggers and Conference Press Passes: The Intricacies of Measuring Influence
It is not about the A-list, but about influence, passion and topicality. A good primer on how to really look at blogs when developing a blog outreach program - not listening to others that just say A-list but a smart way to look at the blogosphere.

B2B Insight: Hype Alert: Second Life’s Media Focus Outpaces it’s Business Success
An interesting post about PR and advertising taking Second Life too seriously. I like SL, I am “in life” and I see the wonderful things that can be done. But, should there be press conferences there? As Andy Lark notes, it seems wrong - but unfortunately there are too many PR firms that jump on bandwagons - let’s open up in SL!! - and don’t think about being part of the community first.

B2B Insight: Think Press Release Quotes are Ignored? The Wall Street Journal says otherwise

Nice anecdote on a well-written quote being used for a news story. Writing is a lost art that needs to be brought back to public relations.

Making News: More on PR’s Digital Revolution
Some good advice - that PR firms can and should use blogs and new media as radar - but if you do not respond, what is the purpose? To just listen?

Blog Business Summit, B2B Marketing Insight, Blog / Journalist Praise for an Agency, Search Us All!  October 29th, 2006

ProPR: Blog Business Summit Reports.
Just go check out all the posts from Blog Business Summit and get a great run-down of what was discussed at the conference and anything that might be learned. Another good round-up that points to round-up from Big in Japan.

B2B Insight Blog: Using Executive Roundtable Events for B2B Marketing
A nice, insightful article on what we are beginning to forget: that facetime is important in building relationships. High-tech only goes so far …

Making News: Pearlstein Cheers Qorvis
It’s not every day that a PR firm gets kudos in the press, but a nice article on one agency… reported in a media relations blog.

Open the Dialogue: Constantin’s custom search now on Open the Dialogue
Constantin Basturea - the godfather of PR blogging - has created an aggregated search of 500 PR blogs. An amazing tool from a great guy.

Media Orchard: PR, Media and Ad Bloggers: Send Us Your Logos — Now
Scott’s doing something - not sure what - but if you are a new blogger or an old one, send him your logo. I’m sending my picture, if I’m not too lazy.

B2B and Blogging, Jeremiah the Web Prophet, Bloggers as Journalists, Bloggers Don’t Know Off the Record, and Strategic PR - remember that?  September 28th, 2006

Voce Nation: Blogs Fuel WOM Among IT Buyers
B2B data is almost hard to find, but there is evidence slowly coming out that blogs are fueling search engine results and word of mouth among the corporate world. A good synopsis of a study … that PR people should know.

ProPR: Ragan Conference - Jeremiah Owyang
Some good advice on PR and marketing from a Hitachi evangelist, and how executives can be great evangelists for the company. Remember, though, it’s not just about blogging but about all the communications tools.

hyku: Bloggers & Reporters - What Rules Apply
Are there rules of engagement when you deal with bloggers? We hold journalists to certain standards, but do we just shrug when it comes to bloggers? Which leads to …

Consumerist: Walmart is Mad at the Consumerist

When is off the record not off the record, or a conversation on background NOT on background? When it’s with a blogger, I guess. I know Mike, and am a fan. There are two sides to the story, so here is one side.

Presto Vivace Blog: A strategic approach to public relations
It’s not just about media relations, but thinking overall for a client and about the P in PR. Find opportunities and get them for the clients.

Hot Jobs, Hiding the Past, Changing PR (Again) and PR in SL  September 19th, 2006

FKCBlog: Hot Job Market for Communicators
An interesting podcast interview with a recruiting firm, and noting that while the PR job market seems to be heating up, a lot of corporations are gun-shy on non-traditional backgrounds (which is too bad). As for the job market, it is heating up, but is there more business or just more dot-com-esque business?

Forward Blog: Privacy Warning!
Freedom of speech - just watch what you say. And, well, that includes online as well, on various sites where you might put out your public persona. Too many firms are now looking at online reputations, and it helps to keep a relatively clean one.

On Message: The job of PR isn’t changing … just evolving to incorporate new audiences
It cannot be said enough - the audience is listening and it’s growing. And, yes, there are new ways to reach it - but it is not rocket science, despite the way some people talk about it.

Communication Overtones: PR Meetup in Second Life Attended by the Media, Some Things Never Change
From what was supposed to be a one-on-one interview with me and turned into a group grilling session (okay, not really), but an interesting phenomenon and how PR could use it for various purposes. Of course, we need to figure out a way to raise hands and jump up and down … instead of talking over everyone. :)

Gen Y, LonelyGirl15 and Tradeshows  September 12th, 2006

Naked Conversations: 1/4 of Gen Y Blogs, Charlene Li Says
Well, they read blogs. At least a quarter of them read blogs. What does this mean for PR? That we need to think of social media as part of overall campaigns if we want to reach this generations. As they get older, is their media consumption going to change? It is hard to tell but hopefully so.

Open the Dialogue: Lonelygirl15 fouls the watering hole
And the flip side of Gen Y being all bloggie is that companies and corporations are going to try to take advantage of it - often in a stupid way. Here’s example one: a fake girl on YouTube that roped in a ton of people into her fakeness. A great way to ruin blogs and social media for those of us that have a moral compass.

Alan Weinkrantz PR Web Log: Before You Pitch a Meeting at an Industry Tradeshow, Do Your Homework….
A simple and good primer on how to set appointments at a tradeshow. There’s the buckshot approach - that does not work - and there is the targeted approach, that, is, well targeted and works.

NYT as PR, ABC and blogs, Comment SPAM (or not being a real part of the conversation)  September 11th, 2006

Mark Evans: Vonage’s New P.R. Agency: The New York Times
An interesting look at how a well-placed article can be used to jump a PR campaign. Evans takes a look at a recent NYT article, and how the article was a point-by-point message from the company.

eMedia Tidbits: ABC: How Not to Blog a Show
If you are going to launch a blog for an event or show or product, make sure you keep it up. If you are going to go silent, then pick up posting again, explain why on the first post.

Business Blog Consulting: PR Firms Comment Spamming?
Okay, the advice we are giving PR firms and clients is to become part of the conversation in the blogosphere. That does not necessarily mean launch a blog, but it does mean to comment appropriately. Where is that line, though, where you cross from conversing to SPAMming? It is hard to find that line in the sand.

Don’t forget to sign up and go to BlogOrlando (I cannot go because of work and the Holidays), and Tuesday is Hawaiian Shirt Day (Happy Birthday Jeff Pulver!).

Welcome Back - Everything from anniversaries to blog fights to Canada to Retirements  August 28th, 2006

Phil’s Blog: Edelman, Year One: “The Hires”
A nice post from the first PR blogger, Phil Gomes, and his past year at Edelman and its latest hire, Michael Wiley. Congrats to Wiley, and congrats to Gomes - two of the best out there, and men that we should all raise a glass.

Jack & Hill - A Beauty Blog: Pierce Mattie PR blog spam update
A blogger battle over SPAM - over supposed SPAM - has erupted between a beauty PR firm, Pierce Mattie, and a beauty blogger, Jackie Danicki (who also is part of a blog consulting firm in London). Both present their sides on their blogs - here is Pierce Mattie’s take on the situation - but it is a good lesson for any PR firm that is dipping its toes into the blogosphere: Don’t be an idiot, always be transparent.

ProPR: Toronto and Ottawa PR meetups to discuss social media
Canada is up and running with its own Third Thursday, based on the group founded by four Bay Area bloggers (yes, I am one of them), and has brought in Shel Israel to speak. The purpose of the Bay Area group is to help PR people embrace and learn about social media, and the Toronto/Ottowa groups are the same. Congrats, and if you are in the Great White North, make sure you attend!

NevilleHobson.com: A succint definition of blogging
It’s a new form of word of mouth marketing. It cannot be said enough, and people still do not get it…

Forward Blog: You don’t HAVE to blog about PR
Now, I am pretty dead set against the group-think that everyone needs to blog to get blogging. I know some good PR people that do outreach to bloggers, but don’t blog, and still get it. But, if you do want to blog … it does not have to be about PR. It can be about anything you want.

The New View from Object Towers: The six minute PR pitch
A novel idea - we only have a few minutes to pitch clients to reporters, we should switch that up and do client pitches the same way, after the potential client tells us what they want in six minutes. It’s better than the pain of sitting in a pitch and realizing you were about 100 percent off-base….

Accentuate the Positive, 2.0: AtP2: The penultimate hurrah
The final hurrah from Ike Piggott, who has taken a new job that will take up most of his time. Thus, a blog comes to an end - which is perfectly fine. Best of luck at the new gig!

Citizen CNN, Hot Times, Crisis Times, and Why Weren’t You at BlogHer?  August 2nd, 2006

eastwikkers: CNN Meets YouTube? CNN Exchange to Accept User-Generated Video
As YouTube and other services become more popular, the news shows are grabbing videos. Now, CNN has partnered with Blip.tv to allow citizen journalists to upload their own videos. Is this good for PR? Well, it depends on how quickly PR firms can respond to bad videos…

PR Blogger: Has there ever been a better time to work in PR?
Well, I am not sure. The froth is up, but will it last. For the junior people coming in, I hope that this is not a bubble. But, here’s a nice perspective from a man just starting his career.

Scatterbox: How to make crisis planning a priority? Get real.
You think your company does not need a crisis plan? Read this great scenario, and then figure out how to sell in a plan. It’s the planning for the unknown that keeps us out of the fire.

Hockey Rules, Surveys are a Joke, Networking and Layoffs  July 31st, 2006

Planet Sab: Letter to NHL-Commissioner Gary Bettman (and to Steve Jobs)
While the NHL and its PR machine has done a good job in North America, it has been a little NA-centric … which makes no sense since most of the players hail from Europe and Eastern Europe. Well, to a hockey fan in the US, I can just watch on TV or go to the game. For the potentially growing fan base in Europe, the opportunity to use new media and allow it worldwide has huge implications - especially for a sport that lags behind others.

InfOpinions: Posts about surveys :: Look deeper before you believe
Bloggers love surveys. They tend to point to data that fits most bloggers personal agendas, and then bloggers run with those numbers. The problem is that most of those surveys are crap, and, well bloggers are self-serving and have their own agenda to push (mostly that everyone should blog). Take these with a grain of salt.

Forward Blog: Get out of the office and attend a local event!

Networking is underrated. PR people don’t get that you need to network - in real world, high-touch - to cement connections and people. While working with Optoma, we did events that range from typical industry events, to me chatting up some products when I meet home theater enthusiasts. Remembering that email isn’t enough, but you need to get out there, seems to be a dying thing.

The Bad Pitch Blog: From Pitch to Pink Slip…Bad Pitches Equal Unemployment
Two examples of people being let go for bad pitches. The first is an odd, insane racial post that was to generate buzz for a restaurant. I’ve done restaurant PR in the second busiest restaurant city, and you don’t need to fall for such stunts. The second, though, I am not sure if the woman should have been fired.

Whatever: How (And How Not) To Market To Me When I’m in Blogger Mode
And here is the second part of the firing. The firm should take a looooong look in the mirror, realize that they are not too savvy in the blogosphere (yes, you don’t need a blog to pitch a blog, but for a firm that built itself on blog outreach …) and re-train all their people, top down. Yes, the pitch was bad, yes the pitch was lazy, but give me a break that they have no oversight of their staff, and that they then threw the woman in front of the bus. If senior staff wants to continue to blame junior staff for their foibles, we’ll see more and more of this happen.
